There’s help for Michigan homeowners facing foreclosure. Michigan’s economy has come a long way since the national recession struck in 2008, but the harsh reality is that many hard-working Michigan homeowners are just one unexpected expense away from falling behind on their mortgage, property tax or condominium fee payments, and into foreclosure.

If a resident is unable to pay back these debts, the likeliness of foreclosure becomes all too real. A federally funded program administered by the state called Step Forward Michigan can provide homeowners with the second chance they need to get caught up and get back on their feet by giving them up to $30,000 in interest-free loans to get current on their property taxes, mortgage payments and condominium association fees.

Step Forward Michigan helps homeowners retain ownership of their homes if they’ve been hit with a financial hardship. It also helps counties such as ours collect the property taxes needed to fund our sheriff’s departments and jails, as well as oversee public health, housing, economic development and other important services. We don’t like foreclosing on homeowners for nonpayment of property taxes, and we know that keeping people in their homes makes our communities stronger. Step Forward Michigan is one way to do that.

Michigan homeowners who have been hit with a large medical bill, unexpected home repair, layoff, divorce, death in the family or other qualifying hardship are eligible for the loans. If the homeowner stays in his or her home for the next five years, the loan is entirely forgiven.

Since 2010, the program has helped more than 34,000 Michigan homeowners with $305 million in loans — and nearly half of those homeowners have been from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. More than $40 million in funds remain to be tapped statewide, enough to help an additional 6,000 homeowners.
